SEPANG – Malaysia Airports wishes to address the recent disruption to the Aerotrain service at KL International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 1. The disruption occurred at approximately 8.30 p.m. on 15 October, prompting the immediate activation of our contingency measures. Shuttle buses were deployed immediately to ensure uninterrupted passenger transfers between the Main Terminal and Satellite Building. We can confirm that no passengers missed their flights during this period, affirming the efficiency of our contingency plans.

By 9.27 p.m. the same evening, one train was safely restored to service. Following multiple rounds of safety and operational testing, both trains are currently operating normally.

This incident occurred within the defect liability period of the Aerotrain system. We have since convened an urgent technical meeting with the senior management team from the project contractors, including Alstom and the IJM-Pestech Joint Venture (IPJV), who are also responsible for the power distribution system’s design and installation. The root cause of the disruption is still under investigation, and the contractor will be issuing a separate statement to provide a detailed technical explanation.

In the meantime, we have deployed additional assurance measures within our operational scope. These include thermographic scanning and other relevant diagnostic tests to verify the integrity and safety of the system. We will also continue to closely monitor the rectification works undertaken by the contractor. This latest incident is particularly disappointing given that the Aerotrain system had undergone a stringent testing, commissioning, annd certification process prior to its launch. This process involved independent consultants, safety professionals, and regulatory authorities to ensure compliance with all safety and performance standards.

In view of this development, we will be taking an additional step to appoint an independent assessor to conduct a comprehensive review of the power supply design and the quality of installation works.

Malaysia Airports remains fully committed to ensuring that the KLIA Aerotrain system is safe, reliable, and capable of delivering the high standards of service that our passengers expect and deserve.
