KL International Airport Receives Airport Carbon Accreditation For Its Main Terminal

SEPANG – KL International Airport (KLIA) made great strides in its environmental effort when it was certified by Airports Council International (ACI) under its Airport Carbon Accreditation Programme for Reduction. The programme has four levels of certification, of which, Reduction (carbon management towards a reduced carbon footprint) is the second level. The certificate was presented to Datuk Badlisham Ghazali, Managing Director of Malaysia Airports by Mr. Dennis Chant, President of ACI Asia-Pacific at the Presentation ceremony held in Jordan last week.

According to the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Inventory and Carbon Management Plan, KLIA had reduced its carbon emission intensity by 42.86%. The Airport Carbon Emission Reporting Tool (ACERT), a tool developed by Transport Canada and its consultant EBA with the Canadian Airports Council was used in the calculation of GHG Emissions Inventory.

In receiving the recognition, Badlisham extended his gratitude to the airport's business partners for their joint efforts in reducing carbon intensity in KLIA's day-to-day operations and development. "One of the pillars in the company’s strategy themes and objectives is sustainability. Therefore we consider this accreditation an important milestone in our pursuit for environmental excellence and sustainable future.”

With the certification, KLIA has placed itself with other ACI Asia-Pacific members who had voluntarily participated in the programme, such as Incheon International Airport and Hong Kong International Airport.

Airport Carbon Accreditation was initially launched by ACI Europe in June 2009 and extended to Asia-Pacific in November 2011. It is the only institutionally endorsed carbon management certification standard for airports. The programme independently assesses the efforts of airports with four progressive levels of accreditation, including "Mapping", "Reduction", "Optimisation" and "Neutrality".

Airport Carbon Accreditation is an independent, voluntary program developed by ACI Europe, designed to allow the assessment and recognition of participating airports’ efforts to manage and reduce their CO₂ emissions. The program is administered by WSP Environment & Energy, an international consultancy to enforce the accreditation criteria for airports on an annual basis. The administration of the program is overseen by an Advisory Board. As of November 2014, Airport Carbon Accreditation became a global program and is available to all ACI member airports.
