LANGKAWI - The Prime Minister YAB Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib Tun Abdul Razak launched the brand new VIP Annex Complex at Langkawi International Airport (LIA) today. The new complex has been named Kompleks Lang Merah, after a species of eagles with red plumage found on Langkawi Island.

One of the important roles that LIA plays is in serving as the gateway to domestic and international delegates who attend the biennial Langkawi International Maritime & Aerospace (LIMA) Exhibition. This recent enhancement will definitely help bolster Langkawi’s image as the host of this prestigious event.

This complex is also part of the Langkawi Tourism Blueprint (LTB) plan, which is being spearheaded by Lembaga Pembangunan Langkawi (LADA) and the Economic Planning Unit (EPU). One of its focus is to improve the gateways to Langkawi namely, its airport terminal and jetty.

The new complex, located next to the terminal building will be used to handle VIP movements at the airport. The 600 square meters complex was built at a cost of RM4.8million and took nine months to complete. Among the services available at this single storey complex are Immigration, Customs, Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services (MAQIS) and Health. This complex also offers free WiFi for its users.

At the same event, Malaysia Airports also celebrated LIA’s achievement of winning the "Best Airport by Region (Asia Pacific) for up to 2 Million Passengers per Year (0-2 mppa)" in the Airport Council International (ACI) Airport Service Quality (ASQ) Awards 2014. A certificate of achievement was presented by Tan Sri Datuk Sri Dr Wan Abdul Aziz Wan Abdullah, Chairman of Malaysia Airports to Jefry Ramli, the Airport Manager of LIA, witnessed by the Prime Minister, Menteri Besar of Kedah and Minister of Transport, Malaysia.

This win marked the second successive win for LIA, having won the same award in 2013 when LIA participated in the survey for the first time.

In 2012, Malaysia Airports re-modelled Langkawi International Airport into a world-class leisure airport, introducing new concepts and brands to appeal to the cross section of international tourists who frequent the island resort annually. Langkawi International Airport was also earmarked as a Leisure Airport Model in line with Tourism Malaysia’s effort of marketing the island as a premier travel destination.
